How to Choose Between Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula Wine Tours?

  • Home Blog How to Choose Between Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula Wine Tours?
The Mornington Peninsula

Victoria has so many wonderful regional areas to tour that sometimes it actually gets difficult to choose which one to visit. Close to Melbourne and perfect for day tours, both the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula boast first class wines and wineries, as well as other attractions which call out to be visited and experienced.

In this guide, we’re going to discuss the differences between the regions in terms of wines and other attractions, to help you choose one or the other. The ideal choice would be to do one this weekend, and then the other next weekend.

The Mornington Peninsula

This scenic, coastal part of Victoria is a sea change escape from the hustle of city life. Rustic hinterlands and seaside vistas are welcoming. You can rest and recover in hot springs, or treat yourself to over 200 vineyards.

The cool climate that is prominent in the Mornington peninsula means the vineyards specialise in bold Pinot Noir wines, with some crisp Chardonnay as well.

The maritime climate with moderate sea breezes allow for long, slow ripening for the grapes. This gives high intensity acidity and refined wines to taste. The Pinot Noir in this region is lighter and more aromatic than regular styles of this wine. They are a savoury wine with notes of cherry and strawberry, and are bright and fruity with a complex structure.

The local Chardonnay is renowned for its purity and restraint, with a taste range from citrusy to creamy and oaky.

Many of the wineries in the Mornington Peninsula are small, family owned ventures. They like to prioritise quality over quantity. You will find some premium tasting wine in the region, but small batches only.

What Other Attractions on Mornington Peninsula?

Beyond the 200 wineries to taste on the peninsula, there are breweries and gin distilleries in Dromana, as well as boutique coffee roasters in the same area.

If you want to spend a relaxing weekend in the region, you could look at an overnight stay at the Peninsula Hot Springs, with bathing and relaxation top of the menu there.

Sorrento has a world famous vanilla slice, shops, art galleries and bookstores to tempt you, and a great seafront to enjoy a picnic with friends and family.

Further, McLelland Sculpture Park and Gallery is a sight to see, along with Point Nepean National Park and the Cape Schank Lighthouse.

There is a lot to see and do on the Mornington Peninsula, plenty of good food and wine to fill your bellies on a tour with Teepee Tours.

What is Yarra Valley Like?

The Yarra Valley is a lush green hinterland with rolling hills, mountain backdrops and lush farmland. Rustic villages dot the countryside such as Warburton and Yarra Glen, where you will find bakeries with hot bread, boutique arts and crafts and more.

The region has over 150 wineries and cellar doors including the world-famous De Bortoli wines. It also boasts a cider and ale trail, with glorious microbreweries and the renowned Four Pillars Gin distillery.

What is Yarra Valley Like

The cool climate of the Yarra valley enhances acidity in the wines and produces nuanced fruity flavours. A full range of wines can be found amongst the vineyards here, with world-famous Pinot Noir from Giant Steps and Chardonnay from Mandala. The region also has its fair share of spectacular Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties for you to experience.

Due to variations in altitude within the Yarra Valley, you have a wide range of wines to sample, from early picked, aromatic drops to more complex styles picked from older vines.

What More Does the Yarra Valley Have to Offer?

There is more to tempt you to the Yarra Valley than just the wineries and distilleries.

For nature enthusiasts the redwood forest near Warburton, with towering redwood trees, awaits you. Mount Donna Buang has spectacular views of the valley, and in winter you can sometimes play in the snow!

What More Does the Yarra Valley Have to Offer

If you’re into walking, or cycling, the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail follows the old railway path through the Valley. Check out the Carriage Cafe in Seville for a pleasant pit stop.

For those who like art and culture you can visit the TarraWarra Museum of Art in Healesville, and the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale, the gateway to the Valley.

If you like a leisurely stroll through gardens, you can visit the Aliwyn Gardens in Yarra Glen and its wisteria tunnel, or the Blue Lotus Water Garden during the right season.

Of course the Yarra Valley is full of rustic cares serving rich coffee and home made cakes, so stopping for a break is not a problem.

For more up close nature experiences you can try Healesville Sanctuary, a zoo dedicated solely on Australian wildlife.

And for those of you who are really keen, you can even float around in a hot air balloon and see the Yarra Valley from above during the crisp morning air.

How Do You Choose?

Choosing between the two can come down to a few different factors. You have seaside charms and fresh salty breezes, or temperate forests and winding mountain roads. There are hot natural springs or a forest of epic red wood trees. Do you cruise the Yarra Valley for a rustic European feeling, or meander around the Mornington Peninsula with a cool, Mediterranean vibe?

Both are between sixty and ninety minutes from Melbourne, which is super convenient. Both areas have magnificent food places that really lean into the local ingredients. Yarra has a lot of variety in their fare, including farm to table red meat experiences, while the Mornington likes to show off seafood.

Each has their own scenic highlights, with Autumn colour in the Yarra a sight to behold. Rolling waves and dramatic ocean views with grey clouds off the southern beaches could be your thing.

Honestly, to choose, we’d suggest flipping a coin. Heads is the Yarra Valley, tails is Mornington Peninsula. And then do the other one the next time. Honestly, both regions are world class and should be on everyone’s bucket list, so experience both of them when you can.
